1.1. Block Expired Staff Account Login

Hello Everyone,

To improve security, SPARK is going to be removing the ability of expired staff accounts from logging into the system starting June 1st.  LibAdmin users will be responsible for maintaining staff accounts for their locations. To make sure you are notified, please make sure your work email address is in your SPARK login account.

As you all know we upgraded to Evergreen 3.7 in the fall of 2021.  With this upgrade came additional security features for the staff client.  This security feature comes in the form of allowing us to block expired staff accounts from logging in. We will be turning on this feature on June 1, 2022.

What does this mean for you as a LibAdmin?
You will be responsible for the care and maintenance of your staff accounts in SPARK.  You will need to make sure that your staff have taken any trainings to maintain their permissions. You will also need to update permission dates as well as update accounts when staff leave.  As always,  you can also notify SPARK Support for assistance to make those updates.

What does this mean for staff?
They will receive emails from SPARK notifying them that their staff account will be expiring in 30 days and with a reminder 10 days prior if they had not renewed.  They will need to notify you to have their permission updated.

What will the process for this rollout be?
We have adjusted all staff user accounts that have been used in the last year to have expiration dates of June 1, 2023.  This June, SPARK Support staff will start hosting Staff Account Maintenance webinars for those with LibAdmin permissions. The training webinars will review how to add and edit staff accounts, an overview of the various permission levels, and how to handle accounts for staff who are no longer employed. SPARK Support will reach out LibAdmins to help work through each library’s/system’s/district’s current staff accounts to update permissions and email addresses for future renewal notification.

SPARK Support will update all SIP accounts to the same date and maintain those accounts for libraries. We will reach out to confirm which you still need prior to updating.

Why are we doing this?
When Evergreen migrated to a web client, it allowed more staff to access the database from any computer with an internet connection. This has helped with a lot of COVID-19 restrictions and the increase of working from home situations. We at the Pennsylvania Integrated Library System take patron privacy very seriously and want to do everything we can to ensure that privacy is secure as possible.
